What Are Maps?
Objective: Explain why a globe is the most useful type of Earth map. Describe what happens when the round Earth is shown on a flat map
Globe: three-dimensional model of the Earth’s surface. *A globe is the best model of Earth, because is correctly shows the shapes and sizes of features on Earth
Map: flat model of Earth’s surface. The earliest known maps are more than 4000 years old, and were carved on clay tablets. They were used to record property lines and help build roads, canals, and towns.
Distortion: error in shape, size, or distance. Almost all maps have distortions, because it is difficult to copy large areas onto smaller models
Things that maps show:
* Some show locations of and distances between places on Earth
* Others show city streets
* Some show buildings in town
* Some show weather or types of soil in an area

What is a map projection?
Objective: Explain what a map projection is. Name the three kinds of map projections
Map Projection- Drawing of Earth’s surface, or part of it, on a flat surface
Map makers take a plastic globe with a light inside. They trace the outlines of the continents onto paper in order to make a flat map from a round globe
Types of Map Projections
Mercator- Named after Gerardus Mercator. It is made by wrapping a sheet of paper into a tube around a globe. Distortions are found around the poles and between land areas.
Polar- Made by holding a flat sheet of paper on one pole of a globe. Distortions are found in areas away from the poles
Conic- Made by shaping a sheet of paper into a cone and placing it over a globe. When several conic projections are put together, they are almost as accurate as a globe.
