BAKER, Archibald C.
BAKER, Archibald C. - 82, Crescent Beach, Lunenburg Co., passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 5, 1998, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, after a short stay, where he lost his final battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born on Wolfes Island, LaHave Islands, Lunenburg Co., he was a son of the late Caleb and Blanche (Wolfe) Baker. Orphaned as a young boy, he began his career as a fisherman at an early age. He spent much of his life at sea on a variety of schooners, trawlers and draggers, most often as cook as well as deckhand. In later years, his small inshore boat provided his livelihood and enjoyment. Illness forcing his retirement several years ago, he leaves a legacy of tales of the halibut he landed and those that got away. One of the last true "make and break" men of the area, his warm smile and friendly manner caught the eye and lens of many photographers passing by his home. An avid hockey fan, except where the Habs were concerned, he longed to see his Leafs win another one. As a passionate duck hunter, some of his "shots" will never be equalled. He had a wonderful sense of humor, enjoying a good joke, he loved music and a good game of cards, but most of all enjoyed spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, the former Effie Powers, who lovingly cared for him at home throughout his illness; daughters, Marlene and husband Horace Hartlen, Crescent Beach; Bonnie and husband Gary Wilkie, Amherst; Lynn and husband Phil Mattera, Laval, Que.; sons, Lowell and wife Mabel, Kevin and wife Valerie, Derek and wife Andrea, all of West Dublin; sister, Inez MacDonald, Halifax; eight grandchildren, another expected shortly; four great-grandchil-dren.
